The Quicker & Cheaper Way to Balayage —101 of Lacing

Posted:
You may be familiar with the hair color technique Balayage, but today we want to talk about a little something calling Lacing— the coloring technique that makes hair lighter and brighter on the ends. While the technique tends to have different names depending on the company or salon you go to, here at Post Hair Company, we’re referring to Flamboyage, or Lacing.

What is Lacing?

Similar to Balayage, but Lacing adds in an extra step of backcombing. When sectioning off small pieces of the hair, you simply backcomb at the top and then paint  the color on the ends of the hair. The added step of backcombing diffuses the line of color and gives the hair a more lived in look. Our stylist Ashlee Olson says  Lacing benefits include lower maintenance, softer color and less time in the salon chair. Ashlee also told us, “One of the things I like about it over Balayage is it’s easier to get that real icy light blonde.”

Lacing at Post Hair Company will also save you money when compared to other hair color techniques. Ashlee specifically charges 55 dollars for a flash color, being a few strands at the top and around the hairline (pictured above). Lastly, the great thing about Lacing is it’s still customizable. Whether you’re looking for soft peek a boo color or a more saturated color all over, our stylists at Post Hair Company are more than ready to accommodate. Take a look at some before and after Lacing photos below.

Three Reasons You Should Try Balayage in the Summer

Posted:

Balayage has quickly become one of the most asked for hair techniques in recent months, and we totally get it. The french word meaning to sweep or to paint allows for natural, beautiful looking hair, and isn’t that what we all want in the summer? The idea is that less is more when creating a soft, natural look. Read on to see why balayage is the perfect hair for summer and take a look at our Instagram to see some recent transformations we’ve done.

It Looks Natural

If you love embracing your natural hair in the summer, balayage is the way to go. The technique allows for a sun-kissed look without the actual sun damage. Your hair will have a gorgeous, healthy finish perfect to pair with your summer tan.

It’s Low Maintenance

Going balayage will not only save you time, but money too. As your color grows out, it will blend more naturally and you won’t see a typical regrowth line. This will give you some extra time in between salon visits.

It’s suitable for almost all hair types

Everyone is loving balayage because it can be done on both blondes and brunettes, and in many different ways. It looks great on blondes who want to be extra light in the summer and brunettes who want to go bronde. You can have it be as light or as strong as you like, it all just depends on the application technique.

5 No Heat Hairstyles to Try Right Now

Posted:
It’s never a bad idea to give your hair a break from the heat of your curlers, flat irons and blow dryers. Taking even a small break will give your hair time to grow, keep it naturally moisturized and less frizzy. What could be wrong with that? Just in time for spring and summer, take a look at these effortless no heat hairstyles.

Sea Salt Spray

This may be the simplest no heat hairstyle. Spray a sea salt or beach spray to damp hair and scrunch to distribute the product. You can twist your bangs or other strands to create distinct waves throughout. Let your hair naturally air dry and add a little hairspray for volume and hold. Check out a few sea salt sprays for different hair types here.

Sleep in Braids

Another way to create curly, voluminous hair is braiding before bed. You can do two french braids or even simple twists. Cut down on your morning routine with this quick tutorial. When you twist your hair you’ll avoid hair puffing as it dries, leaving you with smooth, natural curls.

Scarf or Bandana

This no heat hairstyle is great for second day hair. Grab your favorite scarf or bandana and mix it with your classic ponytail or messy bun. While it may take a few tries to master your tying technique, look here for a few different ways you can tie a scarf in your hair.

Upside Down Braided Bun

Add a little flare to your top knot with this no heat hairstyle. It is surprisingly not as difficult as you would think to braid upside down, you can find out how here. Wear your braid polished or messy for summer, you can even modify this style if you prefer a pony rather than a bun.

Bubble Ponytail

Another pulled back style, this is a new twist on your typical ponytail. Pull all of your hair into a high pony or sweep it back into a low pony, whichever you prefer. Measure a few inches down and secure with another elastic. Gently pull out the hair between the elastics to create the bubble shape and continue down the length of your pony. See a full tutorial here.

Customer Testimonial: A Spa Day at Post Hair Company

Posted:

This is a personal customer review of their experience at Post Hair Company. She received the ‘New Life’ Mother’s Day package which is meant for moms to be, usually including prenatal massage, but great for anyone. Read on to hear more about her experience.

Last week I received the “New Life” spa package including a 60 minute massage followed by a 45 minute facial at Post Hair Company. Never having a facial before and previously only one massage, I was eager to be pampered.

The Massage
I first stepped beyond a door into a full spa room, separate from the rest of the salon. I felt comfortable from the start as I was guided into a locker room area and given a fuzzy robe and sandals. A locker and key allowed me to house my belongings safely while I was there. I was introduced to the woman who would be giving the massage, and she walked me through what was about to happen. The whole atmosphere in the massage room was very zen, low lighting with faint natural music playing in the background. I will say I felt extremely at ease and relaxed during the entire massage. There was very minimal talking between the two of us, and I felt taken care of and focused on as the client.  The products used had a fresh, light smell that never became overbearing. When the massage was finished I was given water and a chance to relax a bit before the facial.

The Facial
The facial was in a separate room and I was given a smaller robe to wrap up in. The esthetician started by wiping my skin clean to remove all makeup. She took her time to remove all impurities on my skin before starting any treatments. I was already so relaxed from having the massage first, the facial felt very soothing. I remember it being in layers, she would do one treatment and then wipe it away, or that is at least what it felt like. I was given a microdermabrasion  and then had my face wrapped in a hot towel. The facial included a bit of massage on my face and neck. What I remember most was how the products felt on my skin. The Sanitas Skincare was so fresh and light, I could feel it after each treatment. My skin felt like it truly had new life and I didn’t want that feeling to go away.

Review by Carly Connor

Overall
I would recommend this spa package to my own mother or anyone for that matter. The staff at Post Hair Company made me feel comfortable and they were all attentive to the service. I could tell they not only enjoyed their jobs but enjoyed making their clients happy. Another amenity along with any spa service at Post is the sauna and shower. I didn’t use them myself but the staff let me know they are available for all spa clients.

Stylist Interview: Meet Maggie Murphy

Posted:

Need a hair update? Post Hair Company is here to help you feel and look your best this season. Post Hair Company wants to meet your hair needs while also offering tips and trends to help you achieve the hair you love. To do so, we only bring on the best in the business. Today, we’re introducing you to one of our stylists, Maggie Murphy.

Learn more about her below.

When did you first start wanting to be a stylist?
As a little girl I would watch my aunts color each other's hair in the kitchen. It was such a social event, lots of laughter. My best memories are tied to my Nana and aunts doing hair.

Where did you attend school?
I attended the Xenon Academy in Aurora, CO.

How long have you been working in a salon?
I am in my first year as a stylist!

What do you specialize in as a stylist?
I currently work as a cutting specialist. I love short cuts. There's so much that goes into making them just right, they're my favorite!

What is the best part of your job?
The best part of my job is being creative and making people happy. There is something about getting your hair done that makes you feel so good about yourself. That's priceless and I feel blessed that I get to spend my days helping people feel their best.

When and why did you want to start working at Post Hair Company?
When I started looking for my first job I knew I wanted to work in the best salon with the best products. I focused my job search on salons that carry Kerastase and that led me to Post. After meeting Leigh Ann and her family I knew that this was exactly where I wanted to be.

What is your favorite aspect about the salon so far?
So far my favorite aspect is the incredibly talented stylists that I get to work with every day. As a new stylist you rely heavily on the advice and guidance of your co workers. Everyone here has been so welcoming and encouraging. In addition to being the absolute best in the industry, they're all genuinely amazing people.

What is a hair trend that you're loving right now?
I love that shorter hair for women is in right now. It opens up so many options and makes it easier for women to feel confident and stylish without long Victoria Secret hair. It's not always a realistic possibility for every woman.

What are your favorite hair products?
I absolutely love the L'oreal Liss Unlimited Smoothing Cream and Serum. It works so well for smoothing coarse or unruly hair, it smells amazing and it isn't heavy at all. I also love the Kerastase Chroma Riche shampoo and mask. It helps keep my color so vibrant!

What can a client expect from you experience wise when getting their hair done?
I think a client can expect a haircut with lots of attention to detail. Since I'm in the early stages of my career, I've been trained to spend a lot of time consulting with my client to make sure that I get the perfect look for them. They can also expect a pretty bubbly and energetic stylist since I am the definition of a people person. There is nothing that I love more than meeting new people!

3 Hair Color Trends to Try This Spring

Posted:

As the seasons change, so do the trends. Some stay and some fade, but if you’re up for it, they’re all fun to try. Below are some hair color trends to look forward to for Spring 2016. Need a change? Try one of these new colors on your locks and you’ll be sure to turn heads.

Opal Hair

How gorgeous are these tones? The Opal hair trend is a blend of pearls, pinks, blues and purples to create a pastel color reflecting that of the gemstone opal. This color trend is bold but subtle, and with variations, it can be achieved differently on many people. Want to try something new this spring? Brighten up your look with a little Opal.

Bronde

As seen most recently on celebrity Blake Lively, the Bronde trend is definitely relative. Bronde is the perfect mixture and blend of brown and blonde. Want to lighten up your dark locks? Consider going Bronde. This color will have you one step closer to sun kissed for summer.

Silver/ Grey Hair

While grey is often believed to be the color of old people, this popular new trend is putting a stop to that. After being worn by many celebrities, like Rihanna, Grey hair is being embraced. As with Opal hair, there are plenty of different ways to try this trend. Keep your roots dark and have light ends or go from blonde to platinum grey this Spring. If you’re daring enough to give it a try, you just might fall in love.

5 Romantic Hairstyles For Valentine’s Day

Posted:

When it comes to getting ready for Valentine’s Day, most women focus on what they’re going to wear. Usually it entails a red dress or a touch of pink, but the outfit is pretty much always the first step when putting your romantic look together.

But as a salon, we know that the hair can speak much louder than any dress you put on. Whether it’s up, down or a bit of both, there are plenty of hairstyles that are romantic enough for Valentine’s Day, while being easy enough to master.

Here are 5 Pinterest hairstyle tutorials for Valentine’s Day:

Braided Low Bun

The messy bun will always be in style. But for this special occasion, add a braid to make it stand out that much more. This tutorial is pretty simple. And trust us, he’ll love this messy, sexy look.

The Glam Updo

If you want an updo that is glamorous and classic, this look is perfect for your romantic night out. You basically start by lightly curling, yet lengthening your hair with a curling iron or straightener. Then you start making it big and swooped back. Add some pins and you’re good to go. Don’t forget the hairspray!

Loose Waterfall Braid

If you don’t want an updo but don’t want to wear your hair completely down, the waterfall braid is one of the biggest trends in hairstyling right now. It’s fairly simple and it creates a look that everyone will ask about.

Long and Wavy

If you wear your hair in a ponytail a lot, one of the best and most simple ways to impress your date is by mastering a wavy look. He’ll love running his fingers through your hair, plus you don’t have to go through all the trouble with hairspray and bobby pins.

Side Swept Braid

If you’re going for a truly charming hairstyle, look no further than a braid. But instead of it going from the top of your head to the back, curve it for an interesting take on this classic style.

Want a professional blowout in time for Valentine's Day? Book a treatment for this Saturday, February 13, and you’ll not only get a glamorous blow-dry treatment, you’ll also get your makeup done, free of charge! Learn more here

5 Reasons Why You Should Vote For Post Hair Company in Top of the Town

Posted:

Recognition of being good at what you do in the hair industry comes in many different ways. First, client feedback is very important to us, as we sincerely enjoy hearing about how much you love your hair. Next, there’s an award that many Colorado businesses are honored with every year: 5280 magazine’s ‘Top of the Town.’

Top of the Town is just that–the top businesses all over the state being recognized for their experience, talent, customer service and drive. Do you think Post Hair Company should win the award as Colorado’s best salon and spa? We’d love your vote!

Here are 5 reasons why you should vote for Post Hair Company:

We’re Family Owned

Since 1988, Post Hair Company has been a staple hair salon and spa in the Greenwood Village area. But something that you might not know, is that this is a family owned salon that is still owned by its founder.

“When I first started doing hair there were a lot of women in the industry as stylists, however, not many women salon owners,” said Leigh Ann Post, owner of Post Hair Company. “I really wanted to make my own path and be different. The opportunity came up to open my own salon and I jumped at the chance to make a difference and build a business for myself and  my family.”

We have over 140 years of combined experience

Combined, Post Hair Company has 142 years of service experience. Owner of Post Hair Company Leigh Ann has over 36 years of experience. A couple of our stand-out stylists, Ashlee and Adrianne, have six and 11 years of experience (respectively). Since experience is more valuable than anything else when it comes to the hair care industry, we’re pretty proud of that.

Our stylists care about your experience

“I’m really proud to work at a place like Post Hair Company where people are knowledgable and passionate about what they do,” said Post Hair Company’s master hair colorist, Emily Rishavy. “We’re all about empowering people and making them feel confident about their style. Regardless of whether that’s ombre or balayage or whatever came before or what will surely come after, we help clients optimize whatever style they love and they think looks best on them. Trends are important, but so is personal style. Our team is trained to help you find your personal style and apply it in line with what’s hot.”

We have great reviews

“I have been to Post Hair Company 4 times and every experience has been first class. This is a high-end salon where all the stylists seem very business-like and professional. The facility is new, modern, clean, spacious, and well-maintained. There is a full-service spa at the facility, but I have not used that or been into that space, so I cannot offer an opinion on it or the services there. I assume it would be of the same high quality as the salon.” - Mary J., Customer since 2013

Our products are top notch and salon exclusive

The best way to ensure you’re putting safe and effective product on your hair is to buy it here, in the salon. Why? Because we only sell salon-exclusive products. You’ll know what you’re buying, and it’ll be the perfect product for your hair’s needs, instead of everyone else’s.

Why You Should Only Buy Your Hair Products at a Salon

Posted:

Wouldn’t it be nice if everyone could get their hair professionally washed and styled everyday? Since no one else is Oprah, most of us go into the salon about once per month and have to wash, dry and style our hair from home everyday. But with so many options to choose from for everyday hair care, which is the best? If there’s one thing we can’t say enough about this, it’s that you shouldn’t buy any of your hair care products, or even skincare products, online or at a drugstore.

“Diversion is something we fight with everyday, trying to educate clients on why they shouldn't purchase from a big box store or online,” said Ali Post. “A lot of times products are old and expired, a lot of times they aren't even the right product...no joke!”

Even if you commit to buying bigger brands at a drugstore, it might not even be the actual product.

“I personally have seen a Kerastase masque at Target that is a normally is white in color,” she said. “The  masque they were selling at Target was out of the box packaging it normally comes in and the masque itself was blue in color - not even close to the right product.”

Even though the hair and skincare products at the grocery store are cheaper in price, you’ll end up doing more damage, which could cost even more in the end. Why not start out with the best product for your hair and skin from the beginning?

Here are 4 reasons why you should only purchase products at a salon

You never know what you’re going to get elsewhere.

You might think you’re saving time and money by purchasing products online. But how do you even know they’re the real deal – or even if they’re still within their “use by” date?

Post says, “Products do have a shelf life and if you purchase something that is well past its expiration, it loses its efficiency and the expired product may not be stable any longer and could cause serious damage to your skin or hair.”

Cheap products are watered down.

Why spend money on a bottle of shampoo that is only about half product, half water? You already run water through your hair in the shower, so you definitely don’t need to purchase anymore.

We know what’s best for your hair.

You come into the salon to get advice and a professional experience from our educated staff, right? Your stylist knows everything about your hair by the time you leave - and that includes how to upkeep it. We’ll never suggest purchasing something at a grocery store because we know that quality is important when it comes to hair. We’ll suggest the perfect product for your hair and help you pick it out up front.

Our products are salon exclusive.

The best way to ensure you’re putting safe and effective product on your hair is to buy it here, in the salon. Why? Because we only sell salon-exclusive products. You’ll know what you’re buying, and it’ll be the perfect product for your hair’s needs, instead of everyone else’s.

Stylist Interview: Meet Tessa Johnson

Posted:

Whether you haven’t had your hair done in years or you simply want an updated look, Post Hair Company is here to help you feel and look your best this season. Post Hair Company wants to meet your hair needs, along with offering tips and trends to get the hair you love. To achieve that, we only bring on the best in the business.

Today, we’re introducing you to one of our stylists, Tessa Johnson. From styling hair for an event to being able to master today’s hottest hair trends, Tessa is a pro. Learn about her below.

When did you first start wanting to be a stylist?
I can remember always being intrigued by cosmetology. Growing up, I loved watching makeover television shows, and would always play with my doll's hair. It just made sense for me to follow that passion as an adult.

Where did you attend school?
I attended the Paul Mitchell School of Denver.

How long have you been working in a salon?
I started working in a salon five years ago.

What do you specialize in as a stylist?
I am interested in every aspect of hair, and pursue education at every opportunity. Even in my first weeks of beauty school I found an exceptional excitement in special occasion hair, such as weddings, prom and debutant balls. I would consider that a specialization of mine definitely, but recently I've also spent a lot of time perfecting my balyage skill set. I would also consider that a newer specialization of mine.

When and why did you want to start working at Post Hair Company?
Almost two years ago, I was working happily in Boulder in a salon on Pearl Street, but living in Littleton. The commute was just too much to keep up with, and after searching, I discovered Post Hair Company, luckily. I couldn't imagine finding a better fit for me. The atmosphere, management, skill and clientele have been nothing short of phenomenal.

What is your favorite aspect about the salon so far?
I would have to say the team. I am fortunate enough to work with a group of people that are so focused on creating the best experience and styles for our clients, it's constantly inspiring.

Winter is here. What's a good tip for refreshing your hair for this season?
I think that in Colorado, the best refreshment, is exactly that. Refreshing your ends with a moisturizing and revitalizing deep conditioning treatment is key in such a dry climate. It will help keep the bounce and style of your fresh trim, and eliminate fading of the new color you're loving.

What is a hair trend that you're loving right now?
The shoulder length cut for women. It's exciting to see women be courageous with length and letting go of that long time stigma that ties femininity to long hair. I love seeing women feel excited by a new style and gutsy change.

What can a client expect from you experience wise when getting their hair done?
I make it a point to individualize each experience for each client. No matter your goals, the moment you sit in my chair, you are in a place where all concerns, excitement and ideas are heard and recognized. I will do everything in my skill set to make sure we are on the same page with expectations and that the result of our appointment is something you can't wait to take a picture of and share it with all of your friends.

Anything else you'd like to add?
I'm so honored to be in a profession where I am entrusted with the task of creating wearable, inspired and personalized looks for my clients. I hope to see you in my chair soon, whatever the goal may be!

Post Hair Company Now Offers jane iredale Cosmetics

Posted:

In the world of beauty products, there are so many choices. But what you might not know, is that many of the makeup and beauty collections out there aren’t as good for your skin and health as they might appear to be.

With being so conscious of what goes inside our bodies today, we can’t forget about what goes on our bodies - and makeup shouldn’t take a backseat to healthy alternatives.

Thankfully, there’s a collection of cosmetics and products available that is extensively tested to ensure it’s good for your skin and health, while also making you look and feel beautiful. Post Hair Company is excited to now carry jane iredale Cosmetics

Post Hair Company spoke with Corrina Buchanan of jane iredale Cosmetics to learn about how Jane went from England to Hollywood, why she wanted to create this line of cosmetics, and why it works so well for the Colorado woman.

Tell us a little about Jane's background and how she got to this point.
Jane Iredale was born in London, England and moved to the United States as a young woman. She attended the University of Albany and obtained her master’s degree in English and Philosophy. During her undergraduate studies she started her career in the entertainment industry. She worked first as a casting director and then as a writer and producer in both New York and Los Angeles.  Jane then moved on to create her eponymous makeup line that she could feel good about producing and women could feel good about wearing!

When did Jane Iredale products launch and why did Jane want to start this collection of makeup?
Jane’s first collection launched April of 1994, with Amazing Base. Jane wanted to create a line that would nurture the skin, not irritate it. She became passionate about creating this product after being in the entertainment business. Jane realized there was not a makeup on the market that was good for the skin.

What makes this collection different than the competitors'?
jane iredale is different than other makeup lines because we use the highest quality ingredients available to ensure satisfaction with performance, coverage, application, and texture. Our minerals conform to the most current technology available to guarantee broad spectrum sun protection. Our minerals bind together upon application, so they resist running, creasing, and smearing. There is minimal allergy risk because we conduct safety tests. Our products are allergy tested, clinically tested, and dermatologist tested. We also are conscious about using ingredients that are calming to the skin. We use natural preservatives. Our particle sizes are tested. There are no Nano particles in any of our products. The nature of our high quality minerals interact with light to give a soft focus finish. Our finishes range from sheer to full, from luminescent to velvety.

How should a woman feel when wearing makeup?
Jane wants women to feel empowered to make a healthy decision about wearing a makeup that provides the coverage they need but the ingredients for the most beautiful skin.

Do jane iredale products help achieve this?
I myself feel better every day when applying my makeup because I spend so much time and money on my skin. I am happy there is a makeup that follows suit with my skin care and treatments I receive.

Post Hair Company is now using these products. Do you think it's a good fit for the Colorado woman?
jane iredale makes for a perfect fit for active women in Colorado who lead busy lives. Our minerals protect against the harmful rays with no question and require minimal touch-ups. We have a range of foundation shades and finishes, so we can accommodate any woman here in Colorado. There is no stopping us.

Do you have any tips for using this makeup?
Less is better when using our products. There are no fillers or talc in our brand so less product goes a long way. Using the correct brush and finishing spray with each formula will go hand-in-hand with the perfect application.

What's one trend jane iredale Cosmetics is showcasing right now?
A modern smoky eye kit that is inspired by busy women everywhere who want to look their best during this hectic season, but with effortless ease.

Any last details?
Jane loves hearing consumer feedback! So if there is a product you are yearning for that we do not currently provide, send us your feedback and product requests. Jane is happy to look into production. Our wheels are always turning and inspiration is everywhere.

5 Beauty Habits to Adopt in 2016

Posted:
It’s hard to believe that 2016 is right around the corner. If you haven’t already, it’s time to start thinking up resolutions, because the new year will be here before we know it.

If you’re not going to adopt a big resolution for 2016, that doesn’t mean you can’t still pick up on a couple of habits that can drastically change your skin’s and hair’s health.

Here are 5 habits to adopt in 2016 that will improve your health:

Prepare for bed.

One of the worst things you can do to your skin is go to bed without cleaning it and removing the makeup, oils and dirt gathered from the day. You sleep about six to eight hours per night, so you want your skin to rest and be clear from anything that can clog the pores. Facials and other services can take back the time on your skin, but by simply cleaning your skin before you go to bed, you can keep your skin from aging that much more.

Maintain  your length.

We suggest getting the tips of your ends trimmed about every 3-4 months. This will ensure split ends hit the road and don’t keep your hair from growing long and strong. If your hair takes on a lot of elements - blowdryer, straightener, etc. - you might want to move up that appointment. Look at your ends and see if they’re starting to spilt. If they seem brittle and dry, you’re probably due for an appointment

Drink more water.

Your doctor, parents and everyone else probably tells you this, but drinking more water can be a huge blessing to not only your skin, but to your whole body. Drinking water gives you energy, it keeps you hydrated and it can also make you feel full. Drinking a lot of water is one of the best things you can do for your skin - it keeps it looking young, not dry and energized.

Strengthen from within.

Vitamins and minerals can energize, protect and repair the human body. And there’s a vitamin that is perfectly crafted for hair and nail growth, too. We love Nature Made’s 2500 mg liquid formula of biotin. You take one pill a day, and it can give you that extra boost for hair growth. Plus, your nails will become stronger and grow faster.

Get pampered.

If you don’t go in for a facial and to get pampered every once in a while, you should start in 2016. Our esthetician Carrilyn explained something to us that’s vital to healthy skincare: Your skin’s health needs to be maintained, like a diet or workout routine is. We recommend getting a facial about every 6-8 weeks. If you’re gong to be out of town or you know you can’t keep up with that routine, tell us and we’ll suggest some great products to use between your treatments.

5 Hairstyles For Christmas Party Inspiration

Posted:

Whether or not you’re ready, Christmas Eve is only one week from today. If you haven’t purchased something for everyone on your Christmas list yet, Post Hair Company has a list of awesome gifts, all under 100 dollars.

Besides worrying about the gifts, many of us are putting together outfits for a Christmas party or celebration, happening this weekend or next week. Picking out the perfect outfit might be easy, but what about your hair?

If you need a little inspiration for a hairdo that’ll impress everyone at your holiday party, we’ve put together a list from some of the best tutorials on Pinterest. Have a happy hair-holiday with these easy hair looks.

5 hairstyles to rock on Christmas:

Perhaps the quickest and most simple way to style your hair for the holidays is by adding a red bow. If you don’t have much time because you’re busy in the kitchen or traveling to see family, you can put half of your hair up, and simply add a little ribbon.

Having long hair in the winter is both good and bad. It keeps your ears warm, but it’s hard to style to keep away from all the layers you’re wearing. This long ponytail might look intricate, but it’s relatively simple. Keep your hair out of the way while still looking fashionable.

Braids work well in any season. If you have short hair, opt for a small side braid like the one pictured above. If you have long hair, check out this braid tutorial

Want to really get in the Christmas spirit? Add some Christmas berries on a headband. Your hair will look well-styled, while also nailing the holiday in all of its wonder.

Updos are probably the classiest way to style your hair for the holidays. But who has the time to learn how to do an updo on Christmas morning? Thankfully, we have thousands of simple tutorials on Pinterest. Tip: Try it out a few days before to get it down before the big day!

Stylist Interview - Meet Jennifer Olivas

Posted:

At Post Hair Company, we’re proud to have an exceptional team of professionals that are trained, experienced and creative. Whether you’re in need of a quick trim, you need to freshen up your color, or you want a completely new change for the fall season, our team is here to help you look your best and fall in love with your hair.

Today, we’re introducing you to one of our seasoned stylists, Jennifer Olivas. Jennifer has worked at Post Hair for over five years. Learn more about why Jennifer wanted to become a stylist, what she specializes in, and what her favorite fall trend is for hair.

Meet Jennifer Olivas:

When did you first start wanting to be a stylist?
Jennifer Olivas: I started cosmetology school when I was a high school senior. My interest at the time was dressing hair and wigs for theatre and film.

Where did you attend school?
I went to Pickens Tech, a local vocation school that employed one of Colorado’s top theatrical stylists/ wig masters as an educator for their Cosmetology program.

How long have you been working in a salon?
I have been working as a licensed stylist for 11 years.

What do you specialize in as a stylist?
I would consider myself a fine and thinning hair specialist, as well as a specialist in precision cutting.

When and why did you want to start working at Post Hair Company?
I started at Post Hair Co. a little over five years ago. After working as a cutting specialist for most of my career I was looking for a salon where I could learn color from a talented master stylist (Leigh Ann Post), expand upon my current skills as a stylist, and work with some of the industry’s best styling lines.

What is your favorite aspect about the salon so far?
I would have to say our fantastic salon team!

Fall is here. What's a good tip for refreshing your hair for this season?
Don’t be afraid to take up your length and tone down that summer blonde. Fall is a great time to rock a mid-length or short cut with rich brown, soft blonde, or red tones.

What is a hair trend that you're loving right now?
I love that we are seeing a return of highly texturized cuts with lots of movement for both short and long styles.

What can a client expect from you experience wise when getting their hair done?
Honesty, no matter how bad a client may want a look I will never perform a service or cut on a client that I believe will make them look anything less than their personal best. I always perform a thorough consultation with my clients to customize a style that will best complement them.

5 Crazy Halloween Makeup Tutorials To Try

Posted:
With Halloween coming up this Saturday, do you know what your costume is? Whether you’re trying to win a Halloween costume prize or you just want to impress your friends, don’t go with a costume that everyone else will be wearing.

Instead, think makeup. Not only can you utilize makeup as your costume, which costs less than a costume you’ll only wear once, you can do it yourself at home. If you’re not a makeup pro, there are thousands of tutorials out there that will give you step-by-step instructions.

Here are 5 of the craziest Halloween makeup tutorials:

Hair tip: Go for gold. If you can find a gold hairspray (usually found in the Halloween isle of places like Walgreens), this is your best bet. Style your hair up, then spray all over. After this styled look with sticky gold paint, you’ll probably want to come in for a conditioning treatment. This will get your hair clean, soft and free of all that Halloween damage.

Hair tip: Sally has a long, red wig in this tutorial. You can do the same, or even color your hair like the gold option above. Just remember, we're here to condition your hair back to its healthy, everyday look.

Hair tip: For this look, long and sleek is the way to go. Like in the tutorial, you can separate the “two faces” by pulling straightened hair between them. If you don’t have any product to achieve that sleek look, we’ve got you covered.

Hair tip: For the nutcracker look, we suggest a tight topknot. This will keep your hair away from your eyes and face paint, so you can keep this creepy and clever look all night. Want to have the perfect up-do for Halloween? Book an appointment for a quick hairstyle with one of our hair experts.

Hair tip: This one is a little creepy. But with the makeup done well, it can also be super beautiful. For this look, we suggest bringing out the curls. Whether that’s letting your natural curls come out for the night or styling your hair, we have products that can help you achieve that curly look.

Meet Leigh Ann Post, Owner of Post Hair Company

Posted:

Leigh Ann Post, with son Billy Post

Since 1988, Post Hair Company has been a staple hair salon and spa in the Greenwood Village area. But something that you might not know, is that this is a family owned salon that is still owned by its founder.

Read our interview with Leigh Ann Post, owner of Post Hair Company to find out about Leigh Ann’s love for the industry, how she got her start, and why clients of Post Hair Company will get the best experience in town.

Tell us a little about you. When did you first start doing hair?
Leigh Ann Post: I grew up in South Korea and met my husband while he was in the service during the Vietnam War. We were married and I immigrated to the United States in 1971. We moved from California to Colorado in 1978 to raise our family and we have been here ever since. I had worked in healthcare and in hospitals as a young adult and decided to go to cosmetology school in 1979 and I have been doing hair ever since.

Why did you love working in this industry?
Working in health care was not something that made me happy. I really felt like hair was something that could showcase my creativity and I could change lives and make people happy at the same time! Hair is something that is so simple but can make people feel amazing and that is why I wanted to get into the industry in the first place.

Leigh Ann Post

Why did you want to open your own salon?
When I first started doing hair there were a lot of women in the industry as stylists, however, not many women salon owners. I really wanted to make my own path and be different. The opportunity came up to open my own salon and I jumped at the chance to make a difference and build a business for myself and  my family.

What was your goal with this salon?
I had been the head color educator at a salon before I opened my own business and I really wanted to focus on color when we started out. I wanted to make people feel special and help people feel beautiful with color.

Why did you choose this particular location?
We originally had been located at Orchard and University for around 18 years, and 11 years ago we started to look for a new location because the lease was up on our current space. We wanted to stay close enough to accommodate our current clients yet find a new space to hopefully build a larger clientele and service a new area. We found the space we currently are in and felt it accomplished all of those goals and so we built the building and opened 10 years ago.

When did you add on the spa and why did you want it to be apart of Post Hair?
The spa was was opened to simply be a convenience to clients. We wanted our clients to be able to get everything done in one space: hair, skin care, massage and nails. We wanted to be a one-stop shop.

Tell us about your staff. Are they chosen based on certain needs?
We feel very lucky with the staff we have chosen over the years. This industry can have a somewhat high turnover rate and we of course have had turnover. However, we like to hire people who want to have a career with us and grow with our company. We like to hire people based on their personality and people who are friendly and service-oriented, and if we need to help train and educate them that is fine. We just really hire people who are the 'right fit' for our salon.

What kind of experience will a client get when they visit?
The most important thing we want clients to experience is making them feel comfortable. We never want them to feel intimidated here. Post Hair Company Offers 142 Years of Combined Experience in the Hair Industry

In the state of Colorado, there are hundreds of hair salons. You see them in practically every shopping center and even inside shopping malls. But what separates each of these salons from one another and how do you choose which salon to go to?

We can’t speak for all the other salons but at Post Hair Company, we stand out because we have staff that is here to stay, has years of experience, and keeps up with the latest trends.

Plus, to keep up with the latest trends we see on the red carpet, in magazines and on the runway, Post Hair Company enlists L’Oreal to train our stylists. “That’s why I came to Post Hair,” said Ashlee Olsen, stylist. “For someone that’s been in the industry for awhile, education is important.”

To learn a little more about Post Hair Company’s philosophy behind experience, keeping up with the trends, and why the salon hires “career stylists” instead of those who style for a hobby, we spoke to Ali Post of Post Hair Company.

Why do you want to hire "career stylists" for Post Hair Company?
We feel very lucky to be a part of such a growing industry and an industry that is built around creativity and artists that get to "show off" their talent on a daily basis. We like to hire stylists that are passionate about their work and take it seriously and stylists that want to grow with us as a company.  This is truly a family business and when we hire someone we really look at them as our family, and we want to give them all the tools they need to succeed. We have found over the years that career stylists are focused on education, just as our company is. To make the client’s experience top notch we want to provide our stylists with as much ongoing education as possible so they can grow and succeed!

Is growth with stylists important to Post Hair?
Most definitely! When we hire stylists and spa service providers we really look for the right fit for our salon and our family. We want to educate and train our staff the Post Hair way, and even though it's an ongoing process we invest a lot in each of our staff and want them to grow and succeed over time with us.

How do you condition stylists to new trends and products?
This industry is always evolving which is one of the reasons we love it! Our partnerships with L'Oreal Professionnel, Kerastase and Shu Uemura provide constant education on trends and products throughout each year. We really try to focus on having really great relationships with a few, select partners so we can educate ourselves in the smartest way possible. Our brand reps are part of our family as well. We trust them and know they are always here to help in any way they possibly can!

Tell us a little about the L'Oreal classes.Tell us about those.
Most all are hands-on and the educators they provide to us are fantastic and knowledgeable in the industry. We are very fortunate to have these educators come into our salon and work with our staff in an intimate setting so they get the most out of each class. Each year we also reward a few of our staff with classes in either New York or California as a thank you for all the hard work they do. It's a fun way for them to get a little vacation as well as some amazing education in a really fun setting!

How do these classes then help the clients at Post Hair?
Because this industry is ever-changing, education is the key to making the client’s experience the absolute best it can be! We want our staff to be up on current trends and have new and fun ideas for their clients so they can offer a new look or that little change the client may be seeking with their hair. Hair can make you feel beautiful and amazing and we want every one of our clients to leave here feeling their absolute best!

5 Fall Hair Trends to Try Now

Posted:
Yesterday marked the official first day of fall. To some, this means driving around Colorado to look at the beautiful leaves changing color. Or it means heading to the Denver Broncos home games throughout the season. But to those of us in the beauty industry, it means fall hair trends.

Whether you haven’t been into the salon since last fall or you’ve been in recently but haven’t changed up your look, fall is the perfect time to consider a new style, cut or color.

Here are 5 fall trends to try now:

The Low Ponytail

This fall trend is something you can do without changing your color and having a big commitment. It’s called the low ponytail and it was seen all over New York Fashion Week. It’s basically starting your ponytail near your shoulders instead of in the middle of your head. It’ll give your hair a fuller look and will play up your locks.

Defined Side Part

The hair part probably isn’t something you pay too much attention to. You stick with the same one and move on to style your hair based on that day’s look. But the part can drastically change up your look in a great way. Defined side parts are big this season. They can also make your hair look fuller. So play with it and change up your part!

Baby Lights

Last week, we told you about baby lights - a hair technique stylists use when you don’t want to strong of highlights, but want a little something. Baby lights mimic the natural colors you had in your hair as a child. They aren’t as big of a commitment as highlights, but they’ll still make a statement.

Natural Waves

For some of us, it takes over an hour to get our hair looking the way we want it before we leave the house. Another big trend this season might save you an ample amount of time. Curl your hair one day, sleep on it, and wake up to natural waves the next. You can also lightly dry your hair with a blowdryer, then let it dry by itself, giving you the same look. All hair types are different, but achieving the natural wave look this season looks great on everyone.

Bronde

In the celeb hair world, changing color is shocking and spreads all over social media. One style a lot of celebs are achieving this season is bronde. This is an in-between blonde and brunette look. You can see it on celebs like Taylor Swift and Chrissy Teigen above.

Hair-tionary: 8 Hair Stylist Terms You Should Know

Posted:

If you’re not a hair stylist, there are some terms you’ll hear in the salon that might sound foreign to you. At Post Hair Company, our stylists know that clients don’t always know what these words mean, so we ask plenty of questions and listen to the look you’re going for, before putting them into technical salon terms.

But that doesn’t mean you can’t learn these words to both surprise your stylist, along with getting the look you really want. To help, we’ve put a list together of some major terms used in the salon world.

Here are 8 salon terms you should know:

1. Sombre: Don’t want to go all the way with ombre but want more oomph than balayge? Ask for a “sombre” – it’s the combination of an ombre and the balayage treatment.

2. Baby lights: If highlights are too strong for you, baby lights make be the perfect addition to your color. Baby lights are fine highlights that mimic the sun kissed hair look you’d get as a child.

3. Point Cut: Getting a hair cut but don’t want it to be too clean? A point cut is when scissors are used to cut hair vertically instead of horizontally. A point cut will make your hair more piecey and a little more edgy.

4. Dusting: Hair should be trimmed every four or so months. But if you’re really worried about how much length is cut off, ask for a “dusting.” This is the most minimal amount that will be cut from your hair.

5. Chemical Cut: If you’re ever sitting in the stylist’s chair and they say that you’ve had a “chemical cut,” the time has come to get your hair’s act together. This means that your hair so over-processed that it breaks off and looks like it was cut. To keep from getting this unwanted cut, come in and let us help get your hair to healthy before it’s too late.

7. Slithering: Believe it or not, some of us were blessed with too much thickness in our hair. A way to help with this is “slithering.” This is done with thinning shears to help even out and thin your hair where it gets heavy in certain areas.

8. Weight line: Speaking of lots of hair, there is such a thing called a weight line – and it’s in everyone’s hair. The weight line is the heaviest part of your hair. The area differs in everyone, but consider it your thickness - and heaviest - hair point on your head.

8 DOs and DON’Ts of Hair Care

Posted:

Eat your vegetables. Get your beauty rest. Have an annual check-up. There are many things we’re told to do for our health, or as we like to call them, the DOs and DON’Ts. But when it comes to hair care, there are also many things we should and shouldn’t be doing.

If you want healthy, silky and strong hair, there are some tips you should abide by. To help you grow that long, beautiful hair that mostly every woman wants, we’ve put a list together of just a few of the DOs and DON’Ts you should follow for better hair growth, shine and strength.

8 tips for healthy hair:

DO take your vitamins.

DON’T wash your hair everyday.
The smell of freshly shampooed hair is unbeatable. But if you wash your hair every day, you’re stripping essential and natural oils from your hair, which can dry it out quickly. Instead of shampooing everyday, skip the shampoo every other day or so, and just condition on that day. You hair will still be clean, smell lovely, and be soft instead of dry.

DO get your tips trimmed.

DON’T frye your hair…too much.
It’s nearly impossible to not use a blowdryer, curling iron, straightener and so on everyday. We don’t blame you, but you do have to be careful. If you use a straightener everyday, try to make the look last for two days at a time. Skip a wash and apply only touch-ups with your straightener the next day.

DO find a color you’ll want to keep for more than 3-4 months.
Changing your hair color and trying new trends is always fun. But if you want healthy hair, you can’t really get away with changing your hair color all the time. Come into Post Hair Company and work with one of our stylists to help you find a color you can maintain and fall in love with for months on end. You hair with be healthier and you’ll feel confident knowing that this color should be here to stay.

DON’T be rough on your hair.
Even though we can’t physically feel hair strands, we can hurt our hair if we’re rough with it. Be gentle while brushing your hair, or you might rip out more than the natural shedding amount. Don’t put a hair tie in too tightly, as you can also damage the strands. And while you’re washing your hair, be gentle. We doubt you have to scrub that hard to get it super clean.

DO use leave-in conditioner.
Whether you’re air-drying or blowdrying your hair, leave-in conditioner can be a godsend if you use it throughout the week. We have numerous leave-in products that will leave your hair feeling silky and looking way healthier than ever before. If you’re going to sleep with wet hair, apply a small amount of leave-in on the ends of your hair. This will keep your wet hair from getting damaged while it’s rolling back and forth on your pillow.

DON’T sleep in a tight ponytail or bun.
Going to sleep with wet hair isn’t too bad for your hair, but what is - is sleeping with your hair in a tight ponytail or bun. Your hair needs to breathe, and nighttime is the perfect time. Chances are that your head doesn’t stay still during the night, so a tight top knot or pony will pull out hairs while you sleep. If you can’t stand loose hair in the night, braid your hair (not too tight) and wake up with a fun ‘do.

One of the best fruits for you skin might be one you don’t regularly purchase, but pomegranates are a fruit you should definitely invest in if you’re looking for a skin makeover. The juice of a pomegranate contains vitamins K and C, which can hydrate your skin. Pomegranates also contain numerous antioxidants such as polyphenols, which can help with inflammation.

A popular summer fruit, blueberries are good for your body, both inside and out. Blueberries contain a ton of fiber, along with vitamin A and C. Blueberries can also help lessen and regularize oil levels in your skin. If your skin is prone to acne, the vitamin A, in particular, can help fight against breakouts, as it’s used in a variety of acne-related skin treatments.

Cherries

Although they might be tart, cherries are also successful in giving you beautiful looking skin. Research proves that tart cherry juice can help lighten and brighten the skin, which will help if you currently have dark spots. Cherries also contain vitamins A, B, C and E, which can help with hair growth and hydration as well as blood circulation in the skin.

Strawberries

Another popular summer fruit, strawberries taste as good as they are for your body. Strawberries contains alpha-hydroxy acids which help reduce wrinkles and other signs of aging, as well as improve the overall look and feel of the skin.

Coconut

You might have recently jumped on the coconut wagon, either drinking coconut water or cooking with coconut oil. And coconut is also great for your skin. Since coconut has natural antioxidants and replenishers, coconut will leave your skin feeling fresh and hydrated, and it’ll last.

1. Kérastase was derived from L’Oréal.

Back in 1909, Eugène Schueller started L’Oréal, which was a small product brand at the time. Today, L’Oréal the number top cosmetic group in the world, being sold and used in practically every salon. Even though Kérastase launched back in the ‘60s, it has only been available as a U.S. brand since about 1999. Before, stylists and lovers of the product had to import it from other counties, mainly Paris. We’re glad Kérastase is now available in the U.S. and is easily accessible.

Meet Your Stylist: Ashlee Olsen

Posted:

Whether you haven’t had your hair done in years or you simply want an updated look, Post Hair Company is here to help you feel and look your best this season. Post Hair Company wants to meet your hair needs, along with offering tips and tricks to get the hair you love. To achieve that, we only bring on the best in the business.

Today, we’re introducing you to one of our new stylists, Ashlee Olsen. She might be new to the Post Hair Company team, but her talent has already allotted her ‘best stylist” nominations and she even took home the award last year.

New stylist profile: Ashlee Olsen

When did you first start wanting to be a stylist?
Ashlee Olsen: When I was 15 and started my first ever job, that's when I met my future hair stylist. She gave me her card and I went in for a cut and highlight. I was inspired from there to be a hairstylist.

Where did you attend school?
The Aveda Institute in Minneapolis

How long have you been working in a salon?
While I was going to school at Aveda, I got a job at Macy's doing makeup at a cosmetic counter. I developed a strong passion for doing makeup and stayed there as long as I could for about three years. While I was working there I got a job at Bella on The Bay and was there for about 5 1/2 years.

What do you specialize in as a stylist?
I specialize in cut and color.

You were the top stylist in your hometown. Tell us about this!
I was nominated in 2013 for “best stylist” and then again in 2014, and won this last year. It’s a local magazine for the lake Minnetonka area, which also had a lot of our rivals in Wayzata, just across the lake. There are three people who get nominated in that category for the year and how you get nominated is by the number of votes you get from clients.

Why did you want to start working at Post Hair Company?
I wanted to work for a top tier L’Oreal professional salon. I was drawn in by how beautiful the salon is. I also liked how Leann Post, the owner, does hair and how it's a family run business. And I also loved Ali in my interview and could tell it was going to be a good fit! I learned from my last boss that it’s important for it to be a great fit.

What is your favorite aspect about the salon so far?
What I like most is the atmosphere is warm, friendly and inviting. I feel at home here.

Fall is coming up. What's a good tip for refreshing your hair for this season?
Fall is always a great time to do a gloss/shine treatment or a deluxe custom treatment from Shu Uemura, kerastase or L’Oreal professional.

What is a hair trend that you're loving right now?
My favorite method that is really in style right now is balayage. It's a free-hand painting method on the hair with out the foils. It creates a real natural, youthful look. I love how natural it looks and being able to really customize the color.

What can a client expect from you experience wise when getting their hair done?
A great consultation and creating a cut you will be able to style on your own at home that fits your lifestyle, [along with] some quick tips on at-home styling, and just being able to relax and have a good time.

Flashback Friday: 5 Dramatic Celeb Hair Transformations

Posted:
Celebrities have eyes on them at all times. From walking their dog to going on a date with someone new, everything is captured on camera. But even those of us who don’t read tabloid magazines can’t resist clicking on an “after” photo when a celebrity has had a dramatic hair transformation.

Some celebs stay under the radar when it comes to getting their hair changed up. They might cut off an inch or two, add a couple highlights and lowlights, or switch up how they’re wearing their hair (goodbye to the long ponytail for Ariana Grande).

Here are five dramatic hair transformations that you’ll either love or hate.

Katy Perry

Katy Perry is one colorful person. She always seems to take the higher road, her tours are incredibly colorful and characteristic, and her hair changes its color frequently. We’re looking back to when Katy switched up her signature black hair color for something that stands out just a little more: green. There was also a purple in there at one time, but the green had us all hating her hair until we started kind of liking it. If anyone could pull off green, it’s Katy.

Miley Cyrus

Miley Cyrus had more than just a hair transformation. It seems this Disney star went from being red carpet appropriate with her fiancé by her side to a wild, wild child. A few years back, Miley went from a classy ‘do to chopping it all off. It’s been platinum blonde to buzzed on one side to plain messy. This hair is wild and we think it compliments Miley’s lifestyle well.

Kim K.

For as long as we can remember, Kim Kardashian has had long, black hair. Then she added the “West” on the end of her name and she started experimenting. Kim got a cut, and then she did something probably none of us saw coming: She went platinum. This didn’t last too long, since her hair is naturally dark and it was probably a pain - even for Kim - to keep up with. But it was a fun blonde ride for all of us to see.

Hilary Duff

Hilary Duff is another Disney star, but this is one that never really went off the deep end. Now that she’s single and, from what her music videos tell us, ready to mingle, she’s also jumped on the colorful hair bandwagon. It’s been green, to blue and now kind of looks both. She still looks gorgeous, so power to Hilary for changing up her good girl look.

Jennifer Lawrence

One of America’s favorite funny girls had us all gushing over short hair a couple years back. Jennifer Lawrence went from long blonde (at one point even brown) hair to a pixie cut. You can bet that thousands of women then went into a salon all over the world and requested the “Jennifer Lawrence haircut.”

Carrilyn, our esthetician, has been in the business for over 15 years and can steer you in the right direction when it comes to steps to increase your skin’s health.

Never had a facial before? Or maybe it’s been years and you don’t realize how beneficial they are. Whatever the case, getting a facial is one of the best steps you can take toward maintaining your skin’s vibrancy, fighting aging and repairing damage.

Here are 5 reasons to get a facial:

Your personal skincare needs are met.

You know those facials and massages that feel like a robot is conducting it? At Post Hair Company, our facials are done by experts who have your personal skincare needs in mind. Whether you have acne, scarring, pores that need attending to, or you just need a fresh start, it’s all about you and your skin when you’re on the massage table. If you’re going to a special event, be sure to tell our esthetician, as she’ll be extra gentle to ensure your skin looks its best.

It’s relaxing from your head to your toes.

Our facials aren’t just an in-and-out process. We make sure you’re relaxed throughout your whole body. While your face in soaking in the mask, you get a hand, neck and foot massage. Don’t worry, we’ll wake you when it’s over.

Skin needs to be maintained, like working out.

Your results last.

There’s nothing quite like the feeling of fresh skin after a facial. But the good news is that this soft texture and clean feeling can be maintained. Again, we use some amazing products to use at home that’ll keep up with your healthy glow. Be sure to drink a lot of water after a facial, as toxins have been released. But drinking a lot of water is also a great way to give your skin a clean, refreshed look and feel.

Did we mention that it feels good?

Everyone needs to take a break from technology, traffic and daily life every once in a while. A facial not only rejuvenates your skin, but it makes you feel good because of how great your skin looks on the outside. Come in and experience it for yourself.

7 Hair Hacks You’ve Probably Never Tried

Posted:

When it comes to advice about hair, there are endless tips and tricks. Sitting in your stylist’s chair is probably the best place you can find actual advice that’s good for you hair, but there are also some hacks online worth trying.

From how to keep those annoying stray hairs down to finishing your look and encouraging it to last, we’ve put together a list of our favorite hair hacks.

7 hair hacks you should try now

1. Keep your fly-aways down.
Whether you put your hair up or leave it down, there always seems to be a fly-away...or 10. If you’re going for a clean, soft look, you don’t want to overload your hair with product just for those stubborn hairs. Instead, grab an unused toothbrush, lightly spray it with hairspray, then swipe it over those fly-aways.

2. Empower your bobby pins.
Speaking of stubborn hair, do you have straight or thin hair that won’t keep your bobby pins in where you left them? If so, lay out a handful of bobby pins on a paper towel, spray them with hairspray or dust with dry shampoo, shake the paper towel so you get them even, and put in your hair. The bobby pins will get a little texture to them so that they’ll stay put.

3. Don’t cut your hair until you’ve done the test.
We saw this in Harper’s Bazaar a couple months ago, and it’s a great way to test if short hair would look good with your face proportions. It’s a great hack, since once you cut your hair, it takes a while to grow back. This is called “The 2.25" (5.5cm) rule” and it just might save the life and look of your hair.

According to Harper's Bazaar, just “position a pencil or pen under your chin horizontally and then place a ruler under your ear, vertically. Take your measurement from the intersection of the pencil and ruler. Less than 2.25" and you'd look amazing with short hair, and if it's anything more long locks will be the most flattering choice for you.”

4. Use your braids.
If you wear braids overnight to get a unique curl look, or you wear braids during the day and want a different look for going out, swipe your straightener over your braids while they’re still in your hair, then take out the braids. You’ll be left with a cool curly look.

5. Use the right brush.
Do you ever get frustrated while doing your hair because it never turns out the way you want it to? It could be the brush you’re using. Here are some helpful tips about why there are so many brushes. The big, round brush is for straightening and smoothing your hair. Using this brush won’t give you much curl. The small, round brush (oftentimes it looks like a metal brush with thin, sharp bristles) can add some curl and volume with a twist of the wrist. And the flatter, paddle-like brush can be used for mostly anything, although it is more like the brush you’ll use straight out of the shower, or before going to bed.

6. Quick wash your hair.
If you have long hair that takes forever to wash and dry, we’re here to tell you about a quick way to get a washed look in minutes. Section of your hair, leaving your bangs left loose. Lightly wash your bangs in the sink with a small amount of shampoo. Then let all of your hair loose and dry your bangs. The front of your hair will look freshly washed and dried, without having to do your whole head.

7. Fight the frizz.
Don’t have time to wash your hair in the morning but hate sleeping with wet hair due to frizz? Don’t be afraid to sleep with wet hair anymore, because we’ve found a hack that’ll help. After washing your hair, put a beanie on and go to sleep. You’ll wake up with less frizz and you’ll avoid those weird sleep-curls.

Which Blonde Are You?

Blonde hair: It might be cause for a few “blonde” jokes, but everyone secretly wished they were a blonde at some point in their life. Whether they got highlights, tried the ombre look, or they went platinum for a day and realized how much upkeep it is, most of us have gone down the blonde road at least once.

But for those who’re actually blonde, we know that being blonde isn’t just one look. In all reality, there are dozens of shades of blonde and they each say something different. So, which blonde are you? Find out below.

The Natural Blonde

The Natural Blonde is someone who likes to keep it simple. Blondes might have more fun, so they say, but the Natural Blonde likes the classic blonde look that doesn’t scream that she’s a blonde.

Maybe she was born with this color, or maybe she just looks like it and used to actually be a brunette. Either way, you’ll only find her coloring her roots when needed, instead of experimenting every month with her color.

The Platinum Blonde

photo link

The Platinum Blonde is probably the exact opposite of the Natural Blonde. This Platinum gal likes to roll with the trends. She saw Kim K.’s platinum hair and knew she’d pull it off even better.

The Platinum Blonde likes hair that is as bright as her smile, and you bet she’ll keep it up monthly, or even weekly, depending on what her natural hair color is. Because, well, platinum definitely isn’t a primary color.

The Athletic or “Dirty” Blonde

For the blonde that’s always on the go and never has time to worry about her hair, she’s the Athletic, or Dirty, Blonde. The Athletic Blonde doesn’t mind when the summer sun changes the tones in her blonde hair.

She might be more brunette one month, super blonde the next, and she doesn’t mind one bit. The Dirty Blonde is probably the most likely of the bunch to leave the house with wet hair. For some reason, this look is amazing on her and she doesn't even realize it.

The Balayage Blonde

The Balayage Blonde is always up with the trends. She watches the “Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show” and wants the balayage blonde that she sees on the catwalk.

Whether it’s letting her roots get a bit darker one month, or lightening those balayaged ends the next, she’s always looking to spruce up her look and keep on-trend.

Fashion Colors: The New, Colorful Trend in Hair

Posted:

One of the newest trends in hair is brightening up the hair world. Fashion (or party) colors are the new thing, even though they probably began in the 1980s. From celebrities rocking pale pink on the red carpet to endless Pinterest pins with colored hair tutorials, the color trend is everywhere – even at Post Hair Company.

Whether you have fashion colors in your hair, or you were just always curious about it, there’s a certain technique and process in order to achieve these colorful ‘dos. We spoke with one of Post Hair Company’s fashion color experts, Adrianne, about why this trend is so popular, what the first step is, and how to maintain all that amazing color.

Adrianne and her fashion colored 'do

When did the trend of bright colors in hair start?
I think the trend of "fashion" or "party" colors started back in the days of punk rock... You might have caught a weird look from strangers for having crazy colored hair or a Mohawk to go with it.

Who is your favorite celeb that has unique colored hair?
I can't think of a favorite celebrity, but the name I think of is Kelly Osbourne. I feel like she made a pale lavender hair color look very classy and made it ok for others to jump on band wagon.

Tell us about the color in your hair.
I colored my hair professionally for the first time when I was 14 – big purple chunks in my hair and I loved it! I’ve been addicted to crazy colors ever since. I think I had carmel highlights once in the passed 16 years, otherwise you can always find me with a different color of the rainbow on my head. I've been fire engine red to purple to blue green ombré.

Why did you want it incorporated in your 'do?
I was inspired by one of Guy Tangs tutorials. He is one of many people I look up to in the hair world industry!

If someone is interested in getting color in their hair, what's the first step?
If someone is interested in having these colors done, I would recommend setting up a consult first, just to see what your situation looks like: if you have damage, if it's even achievable, how much time to prepare for, etc.

How long is the process?
99% of the time, the hair needs to pre-lightened before fashion colors are applied in order to see the true color. So initially it takes a couple hours longer than a normal highlight/color service. It's a double process service, and you don't have to pre-lighten every time.

Is it more expensive to get this treatment done versus normal highlights?
Yes, it is more expensive initially during the pre-lightening appointment because of time and work, but maintenance for refreshing can be a normal color charge. Unless client would like 8 different colors and they want Pinterest rainbow hair, then definitely expect to get charged for your hairdressers hard work.

Is there a lot of upkeep?
Maintenance is refreshing party colors every 3-6 weeks. Yes, these colors  fade faster than regular hair color. Then you can decide to pre-lighten hair again or do what I do, which is pre-lighten once, then grow it out until next color change. The total process can be 2-6 hours depending on hair.

Anything else you’d like to add?
I'm so glad everyone is having so much fun with these party colors and there are so many brilliant ways to make them look classy and amazing!! It's about time!

5 Tips for Growing Your Hair Long and Healthy

Posted:

Some of us made the spontaneous decision of getting that short haircut we saw on the red carpet. It looked great on her, so we thought it would look great on us - but it didn’t. Or maybe we took our stylist’s advice and got the cut in order to repair previously damaged hair.

Either way, we’re now left with a short haircut that seems like it will never grow back. Luckily, growing your hair comes down to a science, and it’s an easy science to practice - with the right formula.

Whether you want long locks like you once had, or you’re just trying to grow  out your hair for a new look, we’ve put together a list of tips on how to get that long, healthy hair that we all seek.

1. Cut your ends every 2-3 months.

Cutting your hair may seem like the last thing you want to do when growing it out, but if you don’t cut the tips every once in a while, it can actually keep your hair from growing any longer. Do you blow dry, curl or color your hair often? Although these are quite normal things to do to your hair, they also damage and can even cause split ends. If you don’t trim your hair, these split ends will keep moving up your hair strand and will cause your hair to break off. So - get your hair trimmed about once every 10-12 weeks and it’ll keep you on the right track for long, beautiful hair.

2. Be Gentle.

You might not realize it, but you might be damaging your hair by simply brushing, towel drying and putting your hair in a ponytail. In order to maintain healthy locks that will grow long, you need to be more gentle or your hair will fight back. If you’re intense with your hair while brushing, you could pull out multiple strands and even break off dry hair.  Putting a heavy, crunchy towel on your head can also rip out hair. And putting your hair in a ponytail can be tough on it and pull it out, too. So be gentle if you want your hair to be healthy and happy.

3. Apply a DIY or professional mask.

At Post hair Company, we have several treatments and products to make your hair healthy and conditioned. But if your next appointment is weeks away, we suggest making an at-home treatment in between visits. We found this coconut and honey DIY mask that is made for repairing and moisturizing damaged hair. It’ll give you that sought after shine, plus coat your hair with healthy nutrition.

Here’s the recipe, courtesy of Real Beauty Spot:

Ingredients:
1 tbsp honey
4 tbsp coconut oil

Directions:
Pour honey and coconut oil in a pan and heat it on a stove top until they get melted. Allow the mixture to be cooled to touch and then apply on the dry hair, split ends and scalp. Massage with your fingers gently and leave your hair for 15-20 mins.
Wash your hair with a mild shampoo.

4. Condition more, wash less.

Most of us think that washing our hair makes it healthier, smell better and look better. This might sound obvious, but cleaning your hair can actually decrease its health and dry it out. Our scalp and hair create natural oils that keep the hair healthy. So by washing it multiple times per week, we’re actually taking away those oils. We suggest washing your hair only about 2-3 times per week, and in warm or cold water, as hot water can dry out your hair. Be sure to condition your hair but limit washing it with harsh shampoos.

5. Use a Biotin supplement.

Throwback Thursday: 5 Iconic Hairstyles

Posted:
Whether you grew up in the ‘60s, ‘80s, ‘90s or even ‘00s, we all remember some pretty big, wild and iconic hairstyles from back in the day. From our favorite musicians on stage to the actresses in films that are now called “classics,” every decade offers unique styles when it comes to hair.

On this Throwback Thursday, we’re looking back at some of our favorite hairstyles - whether they’re remembered for being good or plain awful. Which is your favorite?

5 Iconic Hairstyles From Over the Years

Farrah Fawcett
  • photo courtesy of US Magazine

We all remember her from “Charlie’s Angels.” She was the blonde beauty that every woman wanted to be - and often is for Halloween - and that every man dreamed about. Those long, blonde waves looked relaxed and flawless, but we know it probably took hours to achieve that gorgeous hair - at least back then. We wouldn’t be surprised if someone comes in within the next couple weeks asking for the Farrah, and we don’t blame you.

Audrey Hepburn

Once we saw Audrey Hepburn in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” we all wanted to be classy, wear those gloves and have a crown in our hair. This look has been adapted over the years, which has now migrated into the top knot. This up-do is still a possibility for a formal event, but we might suggest skipping the crown to avoid looking a little conceited.

Jennifer Anniston

Was it a good style or bad? “The Rachel” was one of the most requested hairstyles in the 1990s, but it’s still a controversy whether or not it was actually that good. Jennifer Aniston herself has now said she wasn’t very into it, but it still made our list as one of the top iconic hairstyles. Did you ever have “The Rachel?”

Bo Derek

Bo Derek was a beach babe that rocked the braided look we all slightly wanted, but were all too afraid to actually try. Running on the beach was her specialty, all while making the braids look like they’ve always been a trend. Some of us have tried this while on vacation, and had to quickly take them out when arriving home because we just didn’t live up to Bo.

Cher

Back in the ‘80s, Cher was known for being in Sunny and Cher, wearing those high-waisted jeans, and having that huge hair. Cher is still rocking a similar look, but we love looking back at this music and hair icon. We’ve seen he pull off a sleek look, but we always think of her having hat big, wavy ‘do.

The Truth About Ombre and Balayage: Interview with Master Hair Colorist, Emily Rishavy

If you keep up with hair trends in the celebrity hair world, you’ve probably heard of the ombre and balayage treatments - and you might have even had this coloring treatment done yourself.

When done at home or by someone who doesn’t have experience, ombre and balayage can look like your hair has grown out for months, and it can even turn orange. But with a professional stylist, you can achieve the look that so many celebrities are sporting today.

To look into this hair coloring trend, we talked with Post Hair Company’s master hair colorist, Emily Rishavy:

First of all, can you explain the difference between balayage and ombre?
Emily Rishavy: Both ombre and balayage are very popular applications over recent years, but there’s a general transition toward balayage as many people have come to desire a more natural look.

Balayage is a customized, hand-painted, sun-kissed look – a coloring technique utilized to create naturally highlighted appearance. The technique creates great depth and dimension. You have dimension throughout the hair, as opposed to dimension just on the tips of the hair, which is common with an Ombre application.

Ombre is a “dipped-ends” look that was extremely popular a couple of years ago and is something that typically has a darker root, a medium color to the mid-lengths of the hair, with the ends being brightest.

What’s particularly attractive with both styles, but especially balayage, is the out-growth. You don’t have a dramatic line of demarcation when your hair grows out. With an ombre, it’s almost as if you’re ‘dipping the tips‘ of your hair, so you get a less subtle color transition. Typically, an ombre look is great for wavy or curly hair, and it’s typically for a darker natural hair color.

How long has the ombre/balayage trend been going on for?
Both have been around for years, but ombre was biggest first and has recently evolved into more of what we call a “sombre” or subtle-ombre. Most people who were into Ombre a few years back have now transitioned into a “sombre” or balayage look in the past year or two. That isn’t to say that ombre doesn’t still look great, and if that’s what someone is into and feels great with – rock it. And balayage itself isn’t particularly new, but it’s extremely popular at the moment and that’s where most people’s preference is trending.

Which method is healthier for your hair or are they about the same?
They’re actually very similar when it comes to the health of the hair and neither has substantial unhealthy impacts when it’s applied correctly. When you focus on hair health as we do at Post & Co., a big concern is ammonia. Generally ammonia-free permanent hair color is the healthiest for hair, and either ombre or balayage can be done with ammonia-free color, which is great. Additionally, both ombre and balayage require you to color your hair less often, which is kinder to the hair in general as opposed to traditional foils.

If someone wants the ombre or balayage look, how does the process start?
For someone with dark hair who wants an ombre look, you figure out which pieces on the end of the hair need to be lightened, isolate them and proceed to lighten them. For someone with dark hair who wants balayage, you decide first how they wear their hair and style it, and how light they want to be. Then you select and hand paint those particular pieces with sweeping motion to lighten those pieces that will be most visible or frame the face or style optimally.

For someone with lighter hair who wants and ombre look, you will typically go through and pull darker color and create darker pieces from the root down to the mid length, leaving some ends that are already light naturally, achieving the rootier look. For that same person looking for a balayage look, you again determine how she styles her hair, and then just touch up the roots with light colors and hand paint low lights through the hair to provide dimension.

How long should someone wait before getting the second treatment for ombre/balayage to enhance/lighten the look?
Typically, you can go up to two to four months between treatments, because your hair will blend with your natural look, but it depends on where you’re starting and where you want to end up. The need to color less often is a big part of what makes this treatment or application so popular. If you are graying, however, you’ll still need stick to your current timelines.

What ways can someone who gets the color treatment make their hair healthier after getting it colored?
Since the ends are generally lighter in both of these applications, using a leave-in conditioner and allowing your hair to air dry is ideal. That’s true in Colorado in general, as there’s generally a lack of moisture in the air. Also, using a heat protectant is also ideal before blow drying or heat styling. Finally, use a color-conserving shampoo and conditioner, and avoid very hot water, which compromises the tone of the color and fades it.

How do you feel about the colored ombre look?
Well, sometimes it takes a few times to achieve that look, depending on how light you want the ends and how dark you are to begin with. The goal is to have you love your hair at every stage of the process, but it’s a gradual transition and it takes time to do correctly.

How hard is it to achieve a colored ombre look?
It’s not that it’s particularly challenging, but it’s a process that takes time to perfect and apply over multiple visits. That’s why you want to work with professionals that are experienced in the process. We’re extremely fortunate at Post Hair Company to have a number of master-level stylists, professionals that will know how to make that transition and make it look fantastic at every stage.

Finally, is ombre and balayage really damaging for your hair or are there ways to achieve it without frying your hair?
Absolutely. It doesn’t – and shouldn’t – be damaging at all. The whole process can be done without ammonia, so it’s no more damaging than any other color or process. Balayage is less damaging than a traditional foil. The only scenario that is challenging is if your a dark brunette and you want a very light ombre’d ends, you just have to take your time in getting there in stages. Even then, it’s not any more damaging, you just have to do it right and have a stylist that is knowledgable and trustworthy and is willing to tell you the truth: That you can’t have the end result immediately, at least not without risking damaging the health of your hair.

Anything else you’d like to add?
I’d just say that I’m really proud to work at a place like Post Hair Company where people are knowledgable and passionate about what they do. We’re all about empowering people and making them feel confident about their style. Regardless of whether that’s ombre or balayage or whatever came before or what will surely come after, we help clients optimize whatever style they love and they think looks best on them. 5 Celebrity Hair-Spirations at Every Length and Color

Posted:
We all do it - we take a photo of a celebrity into the salon and ask for “the exact same hairstyle.” Since not all of our hair has the same texture, thickness, length and color, it’s oftentimes hard to perfectly match the look. But luckily stylists are inspired by images you bring in and can give you a look that is perfect, just for you.

But it’s still fun to look at celebrity hair and wonder how it’d look on us. From long blonde locks to short ‘dos that we’ve always wanted to try, we’ve put a list together of some of our favorite celebrity hairstyles. Will we see you in the salon with one of these photos soon?

5 celebrity hairdstyles that we love this season:

Blake Lively
  •

Blake Lively has been in headlines everyday for the past couple of years. It could be because she married Ryan Reynolds and now has a beautiful baby girl named James. Or it could be her style from head-to-toe. Whichever reason you love Blake for, we can probably all agree that her hair is classic and we envy her long, blonde locks. Blake doesn’t change up her style often, and we don’t blame her. She probably achieved this look by getting seasonal trims while keeping her length, by not coloring often, and by using products that will only support her healthy lifestyle.

Alexa Chung

Even if you haven’t heard the name Alexa Chung, you’ve probably seen her in hairstyling magazines or on the Internet when searching for short hairstyles or even ombre. Alexa is an English model and television host, whom is probably mostly known for her trendy style choices and ever-envied hair. Alexa keeps it to about her shoulders, with lighter brown on top, matched with lighter ends. Her bangs look perfect with her face shape, and she’s a great hair-spiration because her look is natural, yet trendy.

Emma Stone

Emma Stone is flawless. From her beautiful gowns on the red carpet to her natural red hair, she’s a style icon for sure. If you were born with red hair, everyone has probably told you never to change it. It’s envied upon by everyone who wants that natural and lovely look, yet it’s not too common. Emma wears her hair down often, letting loose waves flow whether she’s on the big screen or premiering a film.

Julianne Hough

Especially with this hot weather in the air, the “lob” is one of this season’s hottest looks. Even those who’ve had long hair for decades can’t resist this chin or shoulder-length ‘do. "Dancing With the Stars" judge Julianne Hough pulls off this look seamlessly, wearing her hair down with light curls and giving it a heavy side part. Julianne has also dyed her lob pink, but the blonde is what we so desire.

Lily Aldridge

Victoria’s Secret model Lily Aldridge has more going for her than her long, dark hair, but we love her natural balayage look. With her dark eyes and always tan skin, Lily is also a fan-favorite when it comes to bringing in photos of celebs’ hair that we want for ourselves. This look is easily achievable, but please leave it to the professionals instead of doing an at-home treatment.

3 Ways to Perk Up Your Hair for Summer

Posted:
After a long, harsh winter that we thought would never end, the sun has finally come out. Summer weddings have already begun and we bet your summer bucket list is quickly filling up.

Since we all love looking and feeling our best for date nights and summer vacations, there’s no better time than now to perk up your hair for this sunny season ahead.

If you’re not sure where to start, we’ve made a list of three ways to give you radiant, sun-kissed hair all summer long.

1. Lighten the Color

You don’t need to go blonde just because it’s summer. But adding some highlights or lightening all of your hair a shade or two can give you that beautiful summer glow every woman wants. Whether you want natural looking highlights or you want to go trendy with some balayage, lightening your hair will give you a sun-kissed look, perfect for summer.

2. Cut Off Dead Ends

Winter is harsh on everyone’s hair. We’re more inclined to blow dry our hair so that it doesn’t freeze, we’re roughing it up under snow goggles or winter hats, and we’re just not as gentle because well, it was winter. But now that it’s summer and we want our hair to be noticed for its length and lightness, it’s time to do a little trimming. Having dead ends not only makes your hair look fuzzy on the tips, but it can also keep your hair from growing long since the ends start splitting, then break off. So come in for a trim or maybe even a whole new, shorter look. Your hair will both feel and look healthier.

3. Get a Brazilian Blowout

Summer is the perfect time to get a Brazilian blowout. Whether or not you’ve had the treatment before, it leaves your hair feeling soft and looking radiant. At Post Hair Company, we offer the Brazilian Blowout Keratin Smoothing Treatment, which has added benefits versus other blowout treatments. The treatment only takes about 90 minutes, and with the use of Keratin products, you’ll leave with silky smooth hair that has less damage and more shine.
